I posted this in the IAWTV facebook group and got no reaction at all. I think everyone except Bernie has abandoned short form scripted. interesting. i don't know what i thought web series would look like 8 years after lonelygirl15 started, but i didn't think we'd be still dominated by vloggers (albeit more professional) and gag videos. and Smosh is still raking in views & money. its as if IAWTV was created to satisfy a need that still hasn't arisen. And there's been no "Harper's Globe" level experiments of note in the past few years.

hmmm .... you know i. can't. help. myself. Former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar's Secret Start-Up: Vessel, Hulu Meets YouTube[sounds frankenstein-like from the headline ...]By Tony Maglio and Lucas Shaw Vessel is a subscription video service Former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar is building a subscription service for video — pretend YouTube and Hulu had a baby [so a pay youtube?] — according to several individuals with knowledge of the product. Kilar unveiled the product, named Vessel, in a blog post Tuesday. Kilar said Vessel will focus on content, mainly next generation video, but gave no further details. [As if that's any "detail" by itself -- "focus on content" - yeah, that's VIDEO, you have VIDEO on a VIDEO service. what kind of video? oh, "next generation video." WTF is that? smellovision?] It's backed by Benchmark, Greylock and Bezos Expeditions. The last is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos's personal investment arm. Kilar has met with producers and distributors of short-form videos, according to our sources, some for YouTube and some for other platforms. Those who have seen it say the product is excellent, and many more are eager to see it. It has been buzzed about by everyone [EVERYONE!!] in the online video community, but Kilar has effectively kept the product under wraps. Vessel would need exceptional videos to convince people to pay for short-form, and some close to Kilar stress that Vessel will be more diverse than that. Vessel is still in the process of lining up partners for its eventual launch. [Hey, anyone remember Revver? How many youtube derivatives have come and gone since 2006?]Kilar first funded his new venture with money he took home from Hulu — about $40 million in-all — but he has since raised capital. Greylock was always a likely candidate given Kilar's relationship with the fund, and the presence of former Hulu executive Elisa Schreiber at the company. Kilar engendered a lot of respect in Silicon Valley for his stewardship of Hulu, where he built one of the country's most popular video services with an army of engineers and TV shows from his corporate parents. As one person put it, “he walks on water.” [The lack of hyperbole in articles like this is always so refreshing.]Kilar will take lessons learned from both Hulu and YouTube. The service will be freemium [OMG STOP WITH THESE WORDS], employing advertising but also relying on subscriptions. It resembles Hulu and Hulu Plus in that way. He has hired former employees of Hulu and Netflix, among other video sites. The product is mobile-first, much to the delight of entrepreneurs and video companies. YouTube has struggled to monetize mobile views. Though companies generate 40 percent of their YouTube views on mobile, mobile accounts for a much smaller fraction of their revenue. YouTube launched a pilot program for subscription channels, but little has been heard from them since their debut. One partner told TheWrap early on they were not happy with the revenue they saw from his channel. [Meaning: nobody paid to watch my shitty videos.]Kilar worked hard to keep his next project under wraps. He tweeted about it once, posting a link to its website when it was called The Fremont Project. When Kilar dispatched employees to an online video conference a couple weeks ago, they wore badges bearing nothing more than the word “start-up.” He has asked agents and executives to sign non-disclosure agreements, compelling typically candid individuals to shut their traps. Even old friends of his acknowledged they do not know much. Below is the blog post announcing the company name and some details. Vessel promises there will be “much more to share prior to the end of the year.” Hello from Vessel [Hello, Vessel.]We've been busy building a service whose mission is to delight consumers and content creators alike. Though we still have more work to do at Vessel, we want to share this brief update and reach out to the creator community. If you are a content creator, particularly a video content creator, we should talk! We have assembled a unique and talented team, with strong experience building and innovating at places like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon. As a team, we are unusually passionate about the intersection of media and technology; we see an opportunity to improve media, particularly next generation video. [maybe this "next generation video" thing is a euphemism for porn? they do short-form videos for subscription delivery.]Our investors, led by Benchmark, Greylock Partners, and Bezos Expeditions (the personal investment company of Jeff Bezos) are world class and gifted builders. To have such an amazing group put their faith in us is energizing and humbling. [Gottta name drop the bezos. It would be funny if he only gave like $1,000, but using the name is worth much more.]We'll have much more to share prior to the end of the year. But for now, it's back to work for us! ----

I've been remiss by not adding an update. On Saturday, May 10, the Daily Mail posted an article outing Liz's real name and university, along with two photos that look like driver's license pics. Though unattributed, it appears her PR rep Siobhanne also talked to the reporter, and claimed many of the bids may not have been legitimate and could not be verified. The article also had a standard quote from an unnamed student to the effect that the student is shy, and its a shock she would do this. But really, the article had nobody going on the record to discuss the matter.
The Huffington Post did a followup piece on Sunday (they already knew her name but had not outed it), and a few other pieces have noted the Daily Mail outing, but not that many.
It seems like the story will die off soon, barring any new revelations. Liz's blog is still up, with its most recent piece on Sunday May 11:
Should you sell your virginity? Posted on May 11, 2014
Based on my experience……no!
Like I did, you may think it seems like easy money, but it is not. It will take a lot of effort, and then it almost certainly will not work out. It is far from a clean and easy process.
You may not want to believe it, but if you are a virgin, you are not sitting on a pot of gold (and this is actually a good thing, if you place it in a much larger social context).
This experience has been both fantastic and awful for reasons that have nothing to do with losing my virginity and making a lot of money (neither of which will be happening, if you need reminding). But if you are only in it for the money, I highly recommend you get out.
I wish I had time to elaborate more, and I will eventually, but I wanted to be sure and state this now. It seems a very appropriate time for it.

Making the English news rounds today is a story from Turkey, where a contestant on a reality dating show earlier this week admitted to murdering both his first wife and a subsequent lover on the show. Sadly for him, he was asked to leave the show without making a love match. (The show is called "Ne Çıkarsa Bahtına" (Luck of the Draw) on the FlashTV network. It was first reported in the Turkish papers, who by now reporting about all the other papers around the world reporting on it.) Snip from show with subtitles: www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/05/08/turkey-dating-show-murder-wife/8854917/Man on TV dating show reveals killing first wife, lover (milo: at first i didn't realize this meant two people he killed)Doug Stanglin, USA TODAY 4:42 p.m. EDT May 8, 2014 A 62-year-old man looking for a wife on a TV dating show stunned the host and studio audience by revealing that he had murdered his first wife and later killed a lover with an ax during an argument. [First question: Do we really think the producers did not know this already? There's no way they don't ask about criminal background, they don't want to be liable if say, a contestant MURDERS his match.]Sefer Calinak casually mentioned his ["]complicated ["] history with women while appearing this week on Flash TV's The Luck of The Draw, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News tweeted Thursday. He was quick to add, however, that he is now an "honest person looking for a new wife." [sure he is.]Calinak said he had eloped with his first wife, who was also his cousin, when they both were 17, after the girl's family tried to force her to marry a widower. He said things changed after they lived with his family for five months. "Her behavior changed. The nephew of the man who wanted to marry her started to come to our village. I was jealous and I killed her, in a way," Çalınak said, according to the newspaper. ["in a way" - hmm, the translation here is interesting, did he really kill her, or just feels he led to her death?]Calinak said he was freed from prison in an amnesty after serving more than four years on a 13-year prison term. [13 years? he killed her.]After remarrying, he separated from his second wife, with whom he had two children, the newspaper says. [apparently this woman is still alive as far as we know.]He then began an affair with a married woman, Coquette, who reneged on a promise to divorce her husband for him. [Coquette? REALLY? The definition of coquette is "a woman who likes to win the attention or admiration of men but does not have serious feelings for them"]The couple got in an argument, and he was defending himself with an ax while standing behind a door. [sounds plausible ....]"I killed her after she tried to kill me," he said. "She was accidentally killed when I swung the ax." [OMG! What weapon did she have? None, i expect. i think my favorite murder defense of all time is now "She was accidentally killed when I swung the ax." how OJ simpson did not use this airtight defense is beyond me.]This time he served a six-year term before he was freed in another amnesty. [Lesson: If you want to kill your lover, move to Turkey. The prison sentences go down for repeat offenders.]At this point, the host of the program asked Calinak to leave, but he kept insisting he was a victim of "destiny." [Please tell me this isn't the name of the female host of the dating show.]"Bad luck always found me," he said. "In spite of everything, I still want to get married. This time I'll leave it to God. " Gözde Kurt, the show's producer, told the daily Milliyet newspaper that Çalınak had acknowledged before the program that he had murdered someone, but he was allowed to appear because he had served his legal sentence. [AH THEY KNEW. I SMELL A SETUP. But i bet that OJ is literally trying to get booked on there now.]Follow @dstanglin on Twitter

elizabeth-raine.com and the @liz_raine twitter are now deleted. her blog is still up, though the cancellation blogpost was deleted for a number of hours over the past 24. (It was up for a few hours, then now, now back up.) a press release from her agent at www.uniquemediapr.com/ and at shows that Siobhanne is not happy. She is threatening legal action, but I have to doubt whether that makes sense. Liz always said she had the option of backing out in interviews, so it probably was in their contract.

The AUCTION HAS BEEN CANCELLED. (announced within the past 2 hours) I have a lot of thoughts, but will just post her announcement for the moment: musingsofavirginwhore.com/2014/05/08/the-ending/The EndingPosted on May 8, 2014 by musingsofavirginwhore Hello Everyone, I have the ending for you today, at least the ending to my virginity auction. The bidding closed yesterday as planned (high bid was $801,000), but I am here to tell you that the terms of the auction will not be fulfilled. With the blessings of my management and the high bidders, I have decided to put a stop to this kerfuffle (to describe it nicely) and return my focus to my medical training. I still do possess some spitefully strong beliefs about virginity, prostitution, and a woman’s right to do as she damned pleases, but school is my first priority (as it has been for my entire life). At this point, I no longer care about the auction, at all. This was a very easy decision. However, this does not mean I do not care about the people I have met along the way, the heap of life lessons I have been given, the personal transformation that could not be helped, and the social causes that I have discovered. All of these things have real meaning, as opposed to the money. And while this experience has had its ups and downs (and yes, this past week was a down), I am truly so much better for it. And this is not the end of my story, only the end of my auction. I will continue to be here blogging, reflecting on this journey, dissecting social issues, and documenting my return to “normal” life. While there are so many things I have loved about this experience, this blog is unquestionably one of my favorites. I hope you will continue to visit! Love always, Elizabeth P.S. I might change the blog title. Please let me know if you think of anything clever and perhaps more appropriate (even though I truly hate the word appropriate, as opposed to the word whore). P.P.S. I hope you are not too disappointed, I do realize this is another virginity auction stopped short. Honestly though, having tried it, I think there is always going to be something. I will be discussing this further in a later post.

www.bloomberg.com/video/what-makes-maker-studios-worth-a-1-billion-dNOS_7_0T~KdIx_a5xHuXg.html"What Makes Maker Studios Worth $1 Billion?" (video of Erin McPherson on Bloomberg TV) (Erin = Chief Content Officer at Maker Studios, former Yahoo Video Chief hired in September 2013) Answer: NOTHING....maker is sitting at the convergence of new media and traditional media... ...something about morgan spurlock (the supersize me dude, come on....) ... ...we launched MakerTV this week ... (HINT: A VIDEO WEBSITE ...) --- BUT, apparently Disney/Maker just signed a big ad deal with Omnicom. venturebeat.com/2014/05/06/maker-studios-omnicom/Disney’s $500M bet on Maker Studios pays off: Omnicom signs eight-figure deal with the companyWhen Disney put up $500 million in cash plus an extra $450 million based on performance to buy online video-production company Maker Studios, many people were surprised and a bit confused. [and still are ...]But it looks like a much better deal now. Maker Studios has signed an eight-figure upfront deal with advertising agency Omnicom, according to Ad Age. [OK, eight figures, that's uhh uhh, probably $10 million. or 1% of 1 billion -- this is like saying the IceBreakers sours gum ad for Lonelygirl15 made lg15 profitable ...]Maker Studios runs a wide network of online channels, including a number on YouTube [and any not on youtube???], whose collective audience commands high ad dollars. [emphasis on the "collective" here.]A couple of months ago, Omnicom signed a $100 million upfront deal with Instagram after the Facebook-owned photo-sharing app had experimented with ads from a handful of brands, including Michael Kors, Levi’s, and General Electric. The deal came after Instagram introduced support for video, presumably because video still commands the highest engagement and monetization. That makes the Maker Studios deal attractive to both parties. One important element to today’s deal is that Omnicom’s clients will not only get to place ads on Maker Studios’ channels, [apart from youtube's ads???] but they will also get access to Maker Offers and Maker Labs. Maker Offers is a program through which YouTube stars create videos for brands and upload them to their own YouTube channels. [Wheee. Remember when Carl Jr's had a bunch of youtubers make videos, 5 years ago?] Maker Labs is, more or less, the network’s in-house agency. [When you can't understand what people are talking about, it usually means its bullshit, right?]“Labs are a new way of creating content with brands involved … . Our version with Omnicom is to shorten the timeframe of relevant content creation,” Maker Studios global sales head Jason Krebs told Ad Age. [So it sounds like brainstorming where you go from concept to video in like a day, or something?]This deal is also one of the largest ad deals for a YouTube network ever. Usually, companies like Maker Studios give up about 45 percent of their YouTube ad revenue to YouTube. However, they get to keep the money from product placements and branded content, making deals like this one very attractive. [Alright, this is all screwed up. YouTube gives the channel creators 55% of ad revenue. If a channel owner aligns with Maker, that 55% is split between Maker and the creator on whatever terms they have. But these ads are just additional ads being sold on top of the YouTube ads, of which Maker and the creator will also have some split. How many ads can videos support?]The report also points out that while Omnicom isn’t getting exclusive rights over Maker Studios, it is the first to ink such a deal. He expects the network to sign similar deals with other advertising and media agencies.
