When I find out about a "new" band via NPR, I can be pretty sure its not exactly "new", and if its actually good music I feel slightly depressed by the confirmation that I am inevitably falling behind the times. Perhaps its time to actually buy those Birkenstocks Slainte always envisions me wearing. Yesterday's NPR piece about the Austin, Texas band "Quiet Company" was actually quite worthwhile. Their 2011 album "We Are All Where We Belong" is about the the lead singer's loss of faith in God. Hence an "atheist rocker" label that has been applied to the band. www.npr.org/2013/12/05/247338182/for-an-ex-christian-rocker-faith-lost-is-a-following-gainedThe NPR piece also played a few excerpts of this song "The Black Sheep and the Shepherd" which is melodically up my alley (slightly beatles-esque in a sgt. pepper's vein), but the lyrics also deliver. Plus the singer's slightly southern accent reinforces (for me at least) that he really did grow up in a place where being evangelical Christian is all kids know. The kind of kids who tweet about loving Jesus inbetween their selfies. Powerful stuff for thought. I believe in a God, but I also believe we are where we belong. What do you think? Atheists are funny. They are more devote in proselytizing their disbelief in God than any Christian is professing His existence. I don't believe in Santa Claus, yet I don't devote every waking moment in convincing other people he doesn't exist. If you want to believe in Santa Claus or as the Democrats call him, Obama, go right ahead, doesn't bother me.

Not every person of a particular belief system (or lack there of), or just a participant of a certain a way of living (e.g. vegetarian, homosexual, heterosexual, farmer, environmentalist, tattoo wearer, TV watcher, book reader etc. etc.) is vocal in trying to convert others to their way of doing things, or even actively wanting to discuss their own beliefs and way of living. I think most people are happy to just live and let live, so I have to say I find it strange you would generalise that way, Mathieas. I think it's common knowledge that there are hundreds of bands that identify themselves as Christian rock bands - the lead singer of Quiet Company was even part of one. This is the first band I've heard of that has been identified as an Atheist rock band. And just because someone identifies as an Atheist or a Christian/Muslim/Buddhist etc. doesn't mean they identify with every attribute that every other Atheist/Christian/Muslim/Buddhist has, or that it's fair for others to attribute other parts to their identity. All that does is lead to stereotyping and discrimination. However I will add on that note, the band themselves don't identify as an Atheist band. They say they wrote one album with an atheist/humanist tone/subject matter and are now ready to move on. Lots of artists have themes they throw themselves into for a period of time but are not confined to that theme. Do we only think of David Bowie as a "space" rock star? Picasso went through several different styles throughout his time painting and didn't let just one style confine him. I am quite a fan of Regina Spektor and she even did an album that was quite focused on religion, but she isn't labelled a religious singer/song writer as she's known more for other attributes. I also don't find this band terribly proselytic. Their lyrics are more self reflective and expressive of a personal account. Most artists do this with one issue or another. Would you call Samuel Beckett proselytic for questioning the existence of God and the the point of human life through his existential plays? I personally would not. I don't think the point of his plays were to propagandise for existentialism, but he was certainly offering his thoughts, expression, philosophies and other takes on the human condition for people to consider and interpret. Art has a different purpose than propaganda. This band are being artists. Atheism is taking a real slide toward humanism in recent times, and this band is definitely humanist which you can see reflected in their lyrics and general approach to their music. Their focus is not to denounce the existance of God or condemn those who participate in organised religion. They are merely expressing themselves whilst discussing issues around faith, existence, love and life. Anyway, I am actually really liking their sound Milo! I think I might have to download the album and give it more of a listen. I think they are brilliant! I'd be interested to see what else they do in future, even if away from the humanist ideas they have as they seem quite intellectual.  |

glad you like it lisa! i agree with your thoughts. mathieas, i disagree with what you are saying about atheists professing more than Christians. generally speaking, at least among evangelical Christians, it is a core teaching that they are supposed to proselytize - to share the "good news" of Jesus Christ. there is no such "core teaching" or unified directive among humanists or atheists. Atheists don't come to your door like Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses. Some atheist groups have had some fun buying billboards and bus placards and such, as a counter to Christian advertising, but that is really a drop in the bucket. And as lisa says, here the band is not trying to convince anybody of anything, its trying to share the singer's personal journey and angst with religion. I think this review/discussion of the album when released in 2011 shows a good example of "Christian" reactions to the album. Accepting his doubt and hoping he returns to the fold, where all his doubts will be gone and joy of believing in God and Jesus will make him content (because its the "answer" to everything that we all search for, right?) But the band's leader was ok with their heartfelt responses and that didn't involve renouncing Jesus in the least; I'm Taylor, I wrote this record. Just wanted to drop by and say thanks for posting Andre's review and taking the time to listen and/or discuss the record. It was always my hope that this record, while certainly being challenging, wouldn't be completely alienating to believers and that they would, hopefully, recognize themselves in much of it.
